Welcome!
|
November is the perfect month to reflect on how lucky our lives have been. Here in Central Oregon we live surrounded by natural beauty. We are thankful for living amid such opulent splendor. Life has not been so kind to many. Greg Nokes will be here on November 28th at 5:00 PM to give a presentation on Massacred for Gold, his book about an evil chapter in Northwest history. 34 Chinese miners were brutally murdered in the remote Hells Canyon area, their killers never paid for the crime. Greg will have slides and a fascinating presentation. Send us an e-mail or give us a call to sign up to attend this free event and be entered in the drawings for door prizes. December will also have fascinating author appearances, Karen Karbo will be with us on December 5th. Check out the events section of our website for more details on the upcoming appearances. Rich has a bunch of recommendations for our readers of all ages in the store picks section of the website. We wish you a happy Thanksgiving and hope we see you soon at Sunriver Books & Music.

A Grave in Gaza
by
Rees, Matt
This international mystery beautifully depicts the sights, smells, and sounds of both the historical and modern-day Gaza Strip. The conflicts of the UN, Israelis, and Palestinians are descriptive, bold, and humane -- a truly wonderful read by a literary storyteller from the Mideast!--Kathleen Dixon, Islandtime Books &More (Washington Island, WI) |

The Most They Ever Had
by
Bragg, Rick
In spring of 2001, across the South, padlocks and logging chains bind the doors of silent mills, and it seems a miracle to blue-collar people in Jacksonville, Alabama, that their mill survived. In these real-life stories, Pulitzer Prize winner Bragg brilliantly evokes the hardscrabble lives of those who lived and died by an American cotton mill. |

We enjoy hosting author events. We also have several active book clubs. Sometimes author's will lead a book club discussion. If the book club is to be author led, it will be noted. Please send us an e-mail or give us a call if you plan to attend an event. It helps us make sure we have the right number of chairs and refreshements. All events are free and we serve refreshements. Title of Event: Travel Essay Book Club
When: Monday, November 23, 2009 6:30 PM Location: Sunriver Books & Music Phone: 541-593-2525 Description: Iron & Silk by Mark Salzman is the Travel Essay Book Club selection for Monday November 23rd at 6:30. Salzman can definitely write, his works of fiction are powerful stuff. The Soloist was nominated for the 1995 Pulitzer Prize. Lying Awake is set in a convent where a nun must decide if she will undergo medical treatment for epilepsy that may take away the raptures she has always believed were her connection with God. What would you do if everything you believed might be an error? Powerful. Iron & Silk is the true story of Salzman’s time in China teaching English at Hunan Medical College. He was able to interact with the Chinese in ways your average traveler would not be able to achieve. Salzman studied Chinese language and literature at Yale. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude in 1982. So he had a few more language skills than most American visitors in China. He was also deeply interested in martial arts, having studied since he was a child. He continues his education in martial arts in China. The writing is beautiful, the story interesting, and the country worthy of interest. The Travel Essay Book Club should have a good time.
